The Oregon Trail web site (hosted by Idaho State University) has an excellent map showing where the trail begins in Nebraska and Kansas and heading northwest where it ends in the upper corner of Oregon. In the 1840s, people migrating west to Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, California and other western states, could carry only the necessities that would insure a safe trip across a 2000 mile stretch of wilderness. It would have been an extremely rare event to find a piano aboard a covered wagon heading to the pacific coast. Usually in films about the old wild west, the gold rush, early western migrations, if there's a rich interior, a saloon, a parlor, a stage, the scene usually includes a piano. So how did all these pianos get to these cities and outposts in the West? Pianos and many other large heavy objects would take the sea route, all the way south, around Cape Horn, then north all the way up the coastline of the Americas. A very long trip, indeed, at least until the rail road would revolutionize commerce in the United States. Soon pianos would find their ways to hotel lobbies, saloons, concert stages and homes in all the great towns and cities of Washington, Oregon, and California, and then inland, too, to Idaho, Nevada and Arizona. Pianos on the Oregon CoastĪ primary reason people move to the rugged Oregon Coast is for the fresh, salty ocean air, but this type of environment can be very harsh on your piano. Precautions should be taken to keep your piano away from moist, salty air, and in as draft free a room as possible with stable humidity and even temperatures. ![]() When we repair or restore your piano, we will gladly answer all of your questions about keeping your piano in prime condition. ![]() Piano Repair from Oregon to Pennsylvana and Back We hope that after your piano has been restored in our shop, you will come to love your piano like never before.
